My solemn charge to the '26-'27 Theopolis 'Normie' Fellows

July 28, 2026 Mark Brians

At the opening reception at the beginning of the start of each summer term it is customary for the director to give a ‘solemn charge.’ This summer, as the new director, it was my duty to do so. What follows is the text from that charge.

At Theopolis we have two fellows programs: the music program, titled magnificently “The Te Deum Program” and our flagship program, the -erm- normal fellows program. On Sunday you we will welcome in our glad company the Te Deum students, and you will find yourselves referred to by myself, the faculty, the liturgist, our kitchen team affectionately as the “Normie fellows” or simply as “normies.”

Re-post: 40 Theses on Christmas

December 22, 2025 Mark Brians

Every Advent witnesses the gruesome reanimation of the voice that whispers “you know, Christmas is just a pagan holiday…” with that sort of conversational ellipsis that does not so much invite further reflection but halts and forecloses it. The claims are several and equally spurious: Jesus wasn’t born on the 25th, it’s really just an ancient [INSERT CIVILIZATION] practice, it’s just the winter solstice of the northern hemisphere, it’s gone too commercial, it’s become an idol in its own right, Christianity is not about the manger it’s about the Cross, etc.

Theopolis travelogue, summer 2025

July 21, 2025 Mark Brians

Friday, July 11

The whole Brians clan flew through the night out of HNL to PHX. Thank you for all who prayed for us! The kids were great —almost all of them slept. The craziest thing that happened was an altercation between two passengers that almost got the plane turned around mid-flight. Praise God that did not happen!

Theopolis Travelogue

July 29, 2024 Mark Brians

Sunday 7/14/24

I depart Olivet Baptist Church during the chanting of the Creed (what a way to go out! I’m putting that in my notes for a good death: I’d like the Creed to be chanted over me as I lay dying) and head to the airport….

There are no donut trees in the Garden of Eden

February 19, 2024 Mark Brians

p/c rodlong vis unsplash

“What does he mean that there are no donut trees in the Garden of Eden?”

Simply, it means just that. There are no donut trees in the Garden of Eden, just as there will be no bourbon-bushes in heaven, nor jewelry-shrubs in the Resurrection. It points to the fact that God created a world with a potential for further creation. It points further to the fact that when God created Adam and Eve, He created them in His Image, and that a part of that Image is being a little creator —with a lower case “c”— like Him.
