Some note on the way 'That Hideous Strength' begins

The title of C.S. Lewis’ That Hideous Strength comes from a line by Sir David Lyndsay describing the biblical Tower of Babel. It thus sets Babel and, by consequence, the call of Abram as a kind of illuminating flambeau by which we can enter the story. This is, in other words, a story about the dream of Babel and all of the ways in which ‘Babel’ (in all its permutations) twists the real hope of humanity:

Don't lay a hand on the son

When Abraham lays Isaac on the altar, he hears a voice crying-out from heaven “Do not lay your hand upon the boy-child” (Gen 22:12). Abraham, in some sense, wasn’t planning to “lay his hand on the child” though, right? Wasn’t he going to sacrifice him? Why doesn’t the voice say “Don’t sacrifice the boy-child” instead? Certainly, that would have been more accurate.
